Dr. Boyle is a veteran of the university startup world, with more than 30 years working in his own high tech startups or helping create new tech and biotech ventures from the Yale labs. In his current role, Jim leads the university’s efforts to identify startup opportunities across therapeutics, medtech, digital healthcare, and high technology, recruiting domain experts and early stage capital to work alongside faculty innovators.

Earlier at Yale, he founded and led the creation of the Yale Entrepreneurial Institute and the YEI Innovation Fund, wholly focussed on identifying and advancing scaleable student-founded ventures, which created scores of venture backed businesses in tech, healthcare, electronics, and consumer products, and which have raised nearly $1 Billion to date.

While still a PhD student at the start of his research career, Jim studied under the late Professor John Fenn (Nobel Prize 2002) and later worked alongside Fenn and others in their startup to commercialize Fenn’s breakthrough technology, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Jim’s graduate research at both Yale and at the University of Illinois focused on the development of novel analytical methods to probe high temperature chemically reactive flows, using jet reactors and laser-based photoionization mass spectrometry.
