Pathology has a celebrated history at Yale, beginning with some of the first documentation of the 1918 flu pandemic and the investigation into radiation injuries in atomic bomb victims. Now Yale pathology research is accelerating understanding of disease by mapping the epigenetic basis of tumor progression, advancing molecular techniques for cervical cancer risk detection and finding new approaches for novel vaccine development. Yale researchers have discovered naturally occurring nanoparticles that can be used to effectively deliver antibodies, and identified a genetic variant that makes people with HIV more susceptible to tuberculosis, the leading cause of death by infectious disease. Pathology at Yale is also collaborating with the Yale Cancer Center and the Smilow Cancer Hospital on a large-scale genotyping of patients with cancer to speed a new era of personalized cancer therapy.
