Yale tech innovators come from both faculty and students and cross multiple disciplines—including computer science, mathematics, environmental engineering and medicine. Yale faculty researchers have discovered new ways to utilize the open source platform Hadoop, and new ways to optimize traffic in networks, stream data and increase cellular network bandwidth. They are medical professionals designing new apps to predict lung cancer and developing targeted video games that aim to reduce risky health behaviors in low-income youth. Yale students, meanwhile, have designed an innovative algorithm that allows computers to recognize images as textual summaries and an online platform that has revolutionized digital display advertising. They are engaged in hacking competitions, design challenges and the creation of innovative healthcare monitoring devices through the Yale Center for Engineering, Innovation and Design.
